Stables
The Heart of the Cavalry
Perhaps the most unimpressive buildings at Fort Assinniboine were, in fact,
some of the most important. The stables and Stable Guard Buildings
were located on the northwest end of the post behind the enlisted men’s
barracks and housed cavalry mounts for among other units, the Black 10th
Cavalry or Buffalo Soldiers assigned to the fort.
Their brick construction was not typical of forts during
this period.
Each long narrow brick building could house up to 60 horses and six such
buildings existed at the fort. Three Double Stable Guard Buildings
housed what was necessary to maintain the mounts. Each half of each
building was assigned a stable. The front, or east end of each duplex,
contained office space and in the rear, was a hearth and tack room.
