The final stop Beneath the Streets of Havre is the Holland Funeral Home.
An antique organ, funeral chapel and wicker funeral baskets used for transporting
the dead give visitors a rare glimpse into the funeral practices of early
Havre.
Ascending into the bright sunshine of Havre at street level, the visitor
feels a sense of loss. It’s a sense that something special has been
lost – something intangible and yet very familiar. Like childhood
memories, which are real and still not able to be recaptured, the experience
has left you somehow sorry that the past is no longer here, that time has
moved on and left you behind, somehow poorer for the experience.
But your trip through the underground has also been an education – not
just of history, but of the spirit that built the west. You have
glimpsed the handiwork of past generations of soldiers, homesteaders, railroaders,
cowboys and businessmen who wanted something better for themselves, their
community and for future generations. It was time well spent and
it too, is a memory to be savored.
